The workshops are a great opportunity for players to learn from experienced, knowledgeable, and successful coaches. The workshops will make a real difference to each player’s understanding of their discipline and improve their performance. To aid this learning there will be a maximum ratio of 1 coach to every 6 players (in most cases this will be 1:4) to ensure everyone receives maximum help and support.

The workshops are aimed at good club players and above. Players must be competent and confident playing with a hard ball. All players will need to bring their own equipment for the batting and wicket keeping workshops.

For more information please contact Scott Chappell: scott.chappell@somersetcricketboard.org or 01823 352266.

To book your place please see the booking table at the top of the page.

Batting – SCB Performance Head Coach Matt Drakeley

The batting workshop will be run by Level 4 qualified, SCB Performance Head Coach Matt Drakeley. Matt was previously Head of Pathway at Hampshire CCC and has also played Minor Counties cricket for Dorset.  Matt’s role as Performance Head Coach involves him overseeing both the boys and girl’s player pathway, the high performance Emerging Player Programme and he also coaches on the Somerset Academy.

The workshop will focus on batting against both spin and pace where Matt will impart his training methods, knowledge, and philosophy on what it takes to be successful in the modern game. These methods have proved successful for many players who have gone on to play first class cricket.

Fast Bowling – Somerset CCC Analyst and Academy Fast Bowling Coach Andrew Griffiths

Somerset CCC Analyst and Academy Fast Bowling Coach Andrew Griffiths will run the fast bowling workshop. Andrew has a number of roles at SCCC including being the 1st X1 analyst and Academy fast bowling coach. Andrew also leads on all the county age group coaching in the south of the county.

The workshop will focus on the skills required to bowl fast, incorporating the technical, tactical, physical, and mental elements of fast bowling. Andrew will be able to draw on his experience and knowledge of working with performance players to help individuals improve.

Wicket Keeping – Former Somerset CCC Keeper Alex Barrow

The wicket keeping workshop will be run by former Somerset CCC keeper Alex Barrow. Alex played over 60 times for Somerset and also represented England at U19 level. Last season he was player/coach at Exeter Cricket Club and has been involved in county coaching with the Somerset age group teams this winter.

The workshop will focus on the key skills and attributes than enable wicket keepers to be successful, and will involve drills that allow players to express their talent and improve their skills.

Spin Bowling – Somerset CCC Star Max Waller

Max has played over 150 games for Somerset including nearly 100 T20 games. His ability to take wickets with his leg spin has been crucial to the team where in 2017 he finished as the clubs highest T20 wicket taker. Max is currently taking his Level 3 coaching qualification as well as coaching on the SCB 1:1 programme.

The workshop will focus on the key elements to spin bowling allowing players to improve their skills along with their understanding of their role and how to get the best out of themselves. Max will use his experience of bowling against some of the best batters in the world to help players develop.
