School of the Month Award

School of the Month

May 2018 - Axbridge C of E First School

Congratulations to Axbridge First School who are the May winners of the Somerset Cricket Board ‘School of the Month’ Award.

They will receive a trip to the Cooper Associates County Ground for up to 30 of their pupils where they will meet some of the Somerset stars, train in the Centre of Excellence and have a tour of the ground.

Axbridge were nominated by their Assisstant Head who said: 'The transferrable skills that our children develop through teamwork and communication have a real positive impact on the childrens experiences within the school. It is encouraging to see many of younger children expressing a desire to play more cricket, with Cheddar cricket club benfitting from this as they are running more youth cricket groups. Also, in a time with female role-models within the sport gaining more recognition, it's excellent to see how many of the girls in the school respond so positiviely to a genuine sports role-model in Sophie Luff (who we have been lucky enough to have coach in school). We have also planning inter-school competition within our locality. I have shared with class and wider school, the tools I use to make cricket bats - running little demonstrations for them to see the draw-knifes and spokeshaves that are used to create a traditional bat - so even for those who can't make it as a sports person, they could be involved in the sport in a different and possibly more creative way.'

April 2018 - St Stephen's Primary School, Bath

Congratulations to St Stephen's Primary School in Bath who are the April winners of the Somerset Cricket Board ‘School of the Month’ Award.

St Stephen's were nominated by their Head of Sport who said: 'at St. Stephen's we promote cricket as a fantastic sport, and have active clubs after school with high numbers of children learning the sport (over 60 girls and 70 boys this year). Many of our boys and girls are members of Cricket Clubs. This year the school has attended extra friendly matches with other schools a couple evenings a week after school. To encourage more participation, we are also running a morning of cricket for those who have limited experience. We enter The BANES Tournaments and have a good record in those competitions; regularly reaching County / District Finals. As well as playing lots of fixtures we also have a committed group of coaches and pupils who put their heart and souls into practising even on the coldest of days.'

March 2018 - Curry Mallet Primary School

Congratulations to Curry Mallet CofE VC Primary School who are the March winners of the Somerset Cricket Board ‘School of the Month’ Award.

They will receive a trip to the Cooper Associates County Ground for up to 30 of their pupils where they will meet some of the Somerset stars, train in the Centre of Excellence and have a tour of the ground.

Curry Mallet were nominated by their Head Teacher who said: ' the children at Curry Mallet School take the game of cricket and its associated values very seriously. We have for a number of years taken part in the Chance to Shine programme and have regular matches against other local teams. We also hold intra-school competitions where each house becomes a country which we link to our geography and diversity lessons. As well as teaching relevant physical skills, lots of work is undertaken on sportsmanship and values. All children take part in the coaching sessions, even those in wheelchairs. The children work hard, concentrate, support and encourage one another and show resilience and empathy. During Women’s World Cup matches last summer the children loved filling in their score sheets and this certainly helped with their maths. It was fascinating to hear those that knew the rules explain them to those who had never watched a match before! Many of our children attend local clubs as well as the school club and just can’t get enough cricket’.

Both boys and girls get an opportunity to play in teams as we enter a number of tournaments. We also attend specialised coaching days at our local cricket club where several of our pupils play during the summer. The game has promoted teamwork and confidence as well as allowing children to have fun and enjoy the game'.

January 2018 - West Chinnock C of E Primary School

Congratulations to West Chinnock Primary School who are the January (and first) winners of the Somerset Cricket Board ‘School of the Month’ Award.

They will receive a trip to the Cooper Associates County Ground for up to 30 of their pupils where they will meet some of the Somerset stars, train in the Centre of Excellence and have a tour of the ground.

West Chinnock were nominated by one of their School Governers who said: ‘we play a number of matches each year as well as hosting their own mini tournament inviting other locals schools. We also have a coach who regularly delivers cricket in schools and have a great link with our local cricket club where pupils are actively signposted to. In short, cricket is prioritised in terms of time spent during and out of school hours. We have seen an improvement from all the children, teachers and parents not just in playing ability, but just as importantly in understanding the rules, sportsmanship and promoting the friendly environment that is key to enjoying the game. We also attended one of the Women’s World Cup matches last year’.
